How to Set Up Small Order Extra Fees in WooCommerce (Cart Value-Based)

Low-value orders can lead to losses after shipping, handling, and payment processing. This use case helps you add an automatic fee to small orders to protect margins and encourage upsells.

Overview

With the Extra Fees plugin, you can set a fixed fee for orders below a specific cart value, such as $50. This ensures operational costs are covered, even on low-margin orders. (Plugin Feature: Cart Value-Based Fees)

Business Impact Example: Applying a $5 fee on orders under $50 not only helps cover costs but also nudges customers to buy more, improving average order value and profitability.

Preconditions

  • Extra Fees plugin is installed and activated.
  • Cart value rules are enabled in WooCommerce

Steps (Basic Flow)

  1. Go to Dashboard > Extra Fees
  2. Click Add New Fee
  3. Name the fee: Small Order Fee
  4. Set Fee Type to: Fixed
  5. Set Amount to: $5
  6. Under Conditions, apply rule: Cart Total less than $50

  7. Click Save Fees
  8. At checkout, the fee is added automatically for qualifying orders

Alternate Flow

  • If the cart total is $50 or more, no fee will be applied.

Expected Outcome

  • Helps cover operational costs and encourages customers to increase their cart value
